We have just started 'paragraph writing'. However, I still think you need more practice on Coordinators, Subordinators, Sentence Connectors, and 'In addition to'.
1) Coordinators
Coordinators (and, but, so, or, nor, for*, yet*) connect elements of equal importance.
| S + V , but S + V S + V and V S or S + V N and N Adj. and Adj. Phrase and Phrase Can be used in a series: A, B, C, or D | (A comma is normally used.) (No comma is necessary.) |
| Examples: He drinks coffee, but she drinks tea. | (S + V , coordinator S +V) |
She loves to dance, so she bought a studio.
You could buy a car, or you could put the money in the bank.
When there is a new subject and verb, a comma is used before (not after) the coordinator.
I hate to sing but, I love to dance. (Incorrect)
I hate to sing, but I love to dance. (Correct)
| John and George both play football. Paul listens to music and reads books. John, Paul, George, and Harry are classmates. | (two subjects) (two verbs) (series) |
2) Subordinators
Subordinators are linking words that are used to join clauses together. They are used at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence. A clause is a group of words that must contain a subject and predicate. There are two types of clauses:
- independent clauses - these can stand alone as a sentence by themselves
- dependent clauses - these make no sense by themselves.
Example

Common Subordinators
Below are some examples of commonly used subordinators.
| Comparison & Contrast | Cause / effect | Time |

Sentence connectors are used to link ideas from one sentence to the next and to give paragraphs coherence. Sentence connectors perform different functions and are placed at the beginning of a sentence. They are used to introduce, order, contrast, sequence ideas, theory, data etc. The following table lists useful connectors.

Choose one of the topics below. and write a paragraph using connectors you have learnt. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
- What do you think influences someone's personality more: 'environment or genetics'?
- What are the most important characteristics of a good friend?
- what do you like more: a good movie or a good play at the theatre? Why?
- Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? 'Grades (marks) encourage students to learn'.

Environment has an effect on our personalities more than our genetics. Many people think that genetics influence personalities, yet everythink is about the environment. For example, teenagers usually start smoking because of their friends. If parents say a lot of lies to their children, children will say lies easily in the future.Imagine a bad place and a child who is growing up in that bad place. That place has a lot of bad personalities.People are so rude;also, they are arguing with each other all the time while they are talking. You can give many examples like these. The child grow up in that place;therefore, you shouldn't expect that he/she will have a good personality.He/She may have bad habits, for there is a lot of bad examples to see.
YanıtlaSilWe can see good examples, too. If a child in a good environment, that child will have good influence from environment.Besides, parents should be careful about their children' friends, for a friend can cause bad effects on their children' personalities.
When you grow up in a bad family or a bad environment, you can have bad personality.Your genetics can't change that.
In my opinion, a good friend needs to be trustworthy and also honest.First of all, being trustworthy is most important characteristic I look in a good friend. For example I I should feel comfortable to tell my secrets to a good friend. In addition I also should not have any doubts about sharing my private informations.Secondly, a good friend must have another important characteristic which is called honesty. For instance,I never want to be friends with someone who has a lier. As a result, because of the reasons I have mentioned, being trustworthy and being honest are the most important characteristics of a good friend.
YanıtlaSilFriendship is among the people so everything is interactively. I think trust is the first for a relationship. Because we want to share something about ourselfs such as problems, happinesses, secretc. If we can trust, we can share about everything about our lifes; therefore, we feel relaxed. Secondly, if he or she my friend, he/ she must be there in the worst day. I want to support my friend in her/ him the worst day. Friends are the best fulcrum for me.

Finally, a friend should give a lot from yourself. I want to support mu friends for all problems whenever they need. Also, I expect. Friends is the best fulcrum and friendships' necessity is selfsacrifising.
YanıtlaSilCinema or theatre? Everyone has a different answer for this question. I think both have the same value, but some people prefer the theatre because watching live performances is better. Cinema contains more fiction than theatre. Actually, films that was produced in recent years are closer to reality ;furthermore, successful films are made. Nevertheless, theatre players have to remain much better prepared for not making mistakes on the stage. However, actors and actresses have a chance to take a stage again, so we accept that theatre players' job is more difficult than cinema players' job. Theatre can be boring for most people ;thus, people prefer cinema. To me, both of them are important since they have labour in it.
